“Ek is baie bly dat ek my titel suksesvol kon verdedig. Dit is vir my ‘n groot eeer om my land te verteenwoordig”. Het Van Dyk aan die George Herald gesê.

The SA junior squad finished their campaign in style on Sunday, bagging nine more medals to end second in the final standings at the African Junior Championships in Addis Ababa.

Battling strong winds in the Ethiopian capital, the nation’s elite women again led the way, with Gezelle Magerman, Monique Wagner and Jo-Ann van Dyk all securing gold medals, while Johan Scholtz also reached the top step on the podium.

Van Dyk completely dominated the javelin throw with a best heave of 49.47m, more than three metres ahead of another Nigerian athlete, Kelechi Nwanaga.

South Africa finished with a total of 23 medals (nine gold, seven silver and seven bronze) after four days of competition.
